It is with great sadness that IA&HS must record the death of its President, Professor Christopher Elrington on 3 August 2009.

Christopher Elrington, Emeritus Professor of History at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London was best known for his lifelong commitment to the ongoing work of the Victoria County History. The VCH is respected worldwide, and seeks to document every place in every county of England. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1964 and of the Royal Historical Society in 1969. As well as presiding over the Islington Archaeology and History Society he was President of the Camden Historical Society.

Members of all societies he came into contact with have spoken of his warmth and generosity, his joy in supporting the study of History at all levels, and his enthusiastic encouragement of groups and individuals. He will be much missed by all who knew him.
