Site of the 'Angel Inn', Islington Welcome to the Islington Archaeology & History Society website. The Society organises lectures, walks, visits and outings throughout the year.  It also arranges regular archaeological site visits for members, usually in the City. IA&HS also aims to document archaeological findings in the Islington area. It delights in offering local literary and historic walks by arrangement, from school groups to U3A members.

Membership brings with it our quarterly Newsletter, incorporating Islington History Journal, and seminars from ten guest lecturers a year. Non-members are always welcome although we invite a modest donation from them towards the speaker's expenses. We have recently added to the website a summary of past lectures, and the width and depth of the topics are extraordinary, from Roman gardens to our fond farewell to the iconic Routemaster bus.

Archaeology is not just about what is buried beneath our feet; it is about all man-made structures and fragments that are still extant. It is about the people who lived, worked and died in them. We are here to investigate, learn, and celebrate what is left to us.

The Islington Archaeology & History Society was established in 1975. Its primary objectives are:

  • To arrange lectures, visits and courses in relation to the archaeology and history of the London Borough of Islington and with equal honour afforded to the former Borough of Finsbury;
  • To publish work on the archaeology and history of the Borough;
  • To co-operate with local government bodies and other agencies in matters of planning and development within the Borough in order to record and protect Islington's sites which are of archaeological and historical importance;
  • To raise funds, if necessary, for the above activities.

For more information on, or submission to, the newsletter please use our contact form . The Editor of the newsletter is always delighted to receive 'notes and queries' from those with an interest in any aspect of local history, and where our wider membership may be able to help.
