The Society always likes to provide something a little different from the usual lecture, come December and this year's show focuses on Charles Dickens. 'Dickens in love' is of course a subject of perennial interest, but we will explore his views of love through the voices of various couplings of his characters.
We will meet a range of Dickens’ characters, from Pip and Estella (Great Expectations), Bill and Nancy (Oliver Twist), Mr and Mrs Micawber (David Copperfield) and Uriah Heep and his Mother (David Copperfield), plus one or two surprise appearances from the fertile mind of Mr Dickens himself as well as a seasonal appearance from Ebenezer Scrooge (A Christmas Carol).
It is well known that there are few areas of London in which Dickens did not live; but many of his works are rooted strongly in people and situations he knew in Islington, and we look forward very much to presenting some of the people whose stories he had to tell.
The 10 December evening of dramatised scenes was dedicated to the late Peter Powell, whose seasonal Dickens readings will be greatly missed. The run is now extended to The Nave in Islington, run by the Steiner School for the community. |
