London's Gasholders: Works of Art and Engineering

Speaker: Malcolm Tucker
Time: 8:00 PM
Venue: Islington Town Hall, Upper Street, London N1

Malcolm has been a member of this Society from its foundation in 1975, and in the first few years he led an Industrial Archaeology subgroup.

As a civil engineer specialising in buildings, he has aspired to match his enthusiasm for IA with technical understanding.

In 1998-2000 he made a study for English Heritage of gasholders in London, unravelling the major technical and aesthetic changes that took place in the later 19th-century. Gasholders from that period are still prominent in parts of London's landscape, as he will explore in this talk, with particular reference to those at St Pancras.
