The astonishing Assembly Hall within Islington Town Hall is to be restored after years of abuse and disuse.
The Assembly Hall inside the wing of Islington Town Hall is to be restored, as near as possible to its original design. Friends of the Islington Museum, which has just moved to its new home at Finsbury Library, may already know of what lies beneath the grime. A sensitive restoration will be magnificent. We intend to record pre-restoration photographs for the record and archive them, and later record great joy.
The removal of temporary screens inside the auditorium already reveal the size, grace and elegance of the original theatre, and features from 1926 are almost entirely intact. The structure is sound. Even before work begins it is a joy to have seen the revealed whole whilst moving out the last artifacts from the old museum.
Many people recall events in the old Hall and remember concerts, comedy, gigs, and in many cases the Christmas dinner events provided for those who were old and alone. How wonderful to know that this place with all its history will be coming back to the public - it was after all built for us all.
Please contact us with your own memories of the Hall so that we can compile them for our Journal. |
