Islington Archaeology and History Society offers its congratulations to Harley Sherlock on his award of the MBE for services to architecture and to the Islington community.

One of our longest-standing members, he was also a founder member of the Islington Society, and chaired the London section of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

As Chairman of IA&HS it has long been a privilege to spend time in Harley's company, not just for the benefit of learning but also for the fun of conversation and humour. With several of his books on the shelves it is clear that his work was groundbreaking and at the forefront of the opposition to building tower blocks, the importance of a sense of community being his primary concern.
