Our very good friends at the Canonbury Society will be holding their annual summer garden party in June. Members of the Canonbury Society should by now have received invitations, and new members who live in the ward or have a connection with it will be most welcome to join.
As part of the jollity I'll be giving a literary and historical walk of the area at the greatly reduced rate for Canonbury Society members of £2.50 - please show your garden invitation on the morning.
The walk concentrates largely on George Orwell and Islington in the 1940s, although we stray earlier into the childhood of Joseph Chamberlain, and later into the proposed demolition of Union Chapel thirty years ago. We also look at the origins of Canonbury and look at why the New River is neither new nor a river.
References to Joe Orton, and Walter Sickert, will be rendered suitable for younger visitors, although more details may be given to grown-ups in later conversation.
Proceeds will go to the IA&HS funds. We have publications in need of re-printing, and new work that needs to be launched.
Best,
Andrew
