With due respect for the late Peter Powell, who established 'Angel Walks' in 1985, and with deference to his family, Islington Archaeology and History Society offers literary and historic strolls by private arrangement.

"George Orwell's Islington" is a walk that takes in a number of locations with which Orwell would have been familiar, some of which changed beyond recognition during his lifetime, and others in the decades that followed.

Anyone familiar with the millennium film “Blackadder Back and Forth” will know that it had a way of jumping around the centuries, and we do a fair bit of that during this walk, from Angel to the New River and Canonbury.

Following the Napoleonic Wars a huge growth in population put a premium on building as London outgrew itself and began slowly to embrace surrounding towns and villages.

This walk explores an area of London that has spent over a thousand years in almost permanent evolution.

Towpath walks are offered in co-operation between IA&HS and the London Canal Museum. Narrowboat trips through the Islington Tunnel, an amazing feat of civil engineering for its age with a length of three quarters of a mile, are also available from time to time.
